About The Gallery

In 1985 a group of 17 artists and craftspeople came together to form the Hokitika Craft Gallery Co-operative. With help from their friends they designed, built and opened the Hokitika Craft Gallery to showcase the very best of local art and craftwork.
Thirty years later the Hokitika Craft Gallery is alive and well. The gallery on Tancred Street remains one of the best places to see high quality handmade art and craftwork on the West Coast.
Irene Richards, painter is a founding member and clearly remembers the vision and enthusiasm of the original group
There was nowhere in Hokitika with lighting and space suitable for displaying art and craft work, so we formed a legal co-operative and set about buying a suitable property in the centre of the town to build our own Gallery.
With an engineering overseer we poured a concrete floor and constructed a basic roof with steel beams for support. Luckily for us there were builders, a surveyor, a carpet layer and a designer amongst the families involved. We all did our share – contributing skill, money, time and effort. We had a great sense of shared achievement when we opened the doors for business on 21 November 1985.

Over the years 5O members have been part of the gallery. Everyone shares the tasks involved in running a business – at the counter and in the backroom. Sharing the load is one of the great strengths of the co-operative; it gives members the benefits having a gallery while allowing them time to get on with their core business of creating.

When you visit you will meet one of the artists or craftspeople who are more than happy to talk about the work in the gallery. We enjoy socialising and appreciate the feedback we receive from spending time with our customers.
