Irene Richards

Irene Richards at work Hokitika Craft GalleryI am excited by landscape and for 65 years have sketched and painted where ever I have been.

I sketch sometimes on paper while travelling through the landscape by car or aeroplane. These are the “Journey” series.

I also memorize and synthesize details that fascinate me and sometimes include sun rises and sun sets, forests, mountain lakes and Christian imagery.

My Christian faith has inspired me. In recent years I have included the resurrected Jesus returning at his second coming in the clouds over the Westland landscape.

Several of my Icons are hung in the Hokitika All Saint Anglican Church. Some of my work goes up in smoke as I also paint Baptismal and Paschal Candles for my Church.
Usually I complete my paintings at my Hokitika home but sometimes my watercolours are completed on the counter at the Craft Gallery during quiet moments.
I use heavy watercolour paper or canvas to create work from tiny miniatures to large canvases in water colour, oils or acrylics.
Since gaining DFA Hons Painting from Canterbury University in 1963 I have had solo exhibitions and been included in Public Collections and N.Z. In the late 1960’s I exhibited work alongside Toss Woollaston and Colin McCahon.
Since helping found the Hokitika Craft Gallery in 1985, for 30 years, my work has been displayed constantly in it. Many of my works are in private collections locally and world wide.
